Shoulder rests are used to help violinists hold up the violin more comfortably. There are many varieties of shoulder rests available, and the selection of a shoulder rest is very personal. Useful questions to consider are: does it help support the violin, and is it comfortable?
Some violin players do not use shoulder rests, and others use round cosmetic sponges. If you use a cosmetic sponge, note that you will need to purchase rubber bands separately. To minimize neck abrasions, some violinists also find it helpful to use a chinrest cover or place a soft cloth or scarf over the chinrest.
